Learn Amiga DOS

This is a set of audio cassettes that teach you how to use AmigaDOS.  AmigaDOS would have been a great skill to have if you worked for one of the approximately 3% of US companies that used AmigaDOS – in 1988.

But I hear you ask: “How can audio tapes teach me to use something as visual and complex as an operating system?”

Well, there’s a secret to it.  You see, the tapes were just in there to make you feel like you were getting your money’s worth.  The real secret was in the cover.

How?

RPG Fantasy World Quiz

Can you name every town in Azeroth but never even heard of the Azores? Is your main method of travel a Town Portal spell?  When you go outside, do you save every 5 minutes?

When you answered “Yes” to all these questions, you outed yourself as an RPG player.

For decades now, RPGs have been creating mythical worlds that come to life only in a computer, and you’ve been there to explore them.

But how many of them can you name? Take this quiz and see how many games you can match up with their fictional worlds.

At the Global SX-64 Party

When was the last time that Commodore portable computers outnumbered Apples at your local Starbucks?  If you answered “Never.” You would have been right – at least until this January.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the world’s first color portable computer – the SX-64, the Commodore community is celebrating this milestone by holding a series of flash-mob style parties at Starbucks outlets around the world.

Decision Guide: AMIGA

Not a intended as a beginner’s guide, but rather a reference developed to help already established retro collectors and hobbyists ease into new system collecting.   This time, TheBitPlanes takes a look at the Amiga.

Often, when retro collectors and hobbyists have mastered their home computer or video game system(s) of choice, they look to expand into collecting other systems.  The problem is, each system has such deep, well-established online comminutes that clear answers to the simple “where to begin” collecting questions can sometimes be overwhelming.

If you are an experienced collector who wants to also get into Amiga collecting, this guide is for you.  The main question it aims to answer is “What system should I be looking for, and why?”

SRGE Prizes!

Here are the raffle and tournament prizes being donated by The Bit Planes blog for the Seattle Retro Gaming Expo on June 16-17 2012 in Bellevue!

First up, we have a refurbished Dell Mini 10” Atom Z netbook complete with a full licensed copy of Cloanto’s C-64 Forever emulation software. This new version of C-64 forever is the easiest and friendliest way to run classic commodore games, and it comes with several legally licensed games and demos already installed.

We also have this new Conker plush and accessory collection from Conker: Live and Reloaded. You see these guys on eBay from time to time, but this one’s a bit rarer – he comes driving his own cardboard tank! Also included: Conker dog tag and a Conker souvenir shot glass.

We’ll also be bringing tons of cool collectibles to our booth at the show.  Hope to see you there!

The Fable’d cloth map.

Of all the value add items they used to put into RPG games, I think I miss cloth maps the most.

Begun by Richard Garriot with Ultima II, the cloth map was the physical bridge between the real world and the Fantasy world running inside your computer. Cloth fantasy world maps have fallen out of use even in limited edition games, with paper being the substitute.

The designers of Fable II for the Xbox 360 went to the trouble of designing a cloth-look map for the game, but it didn’t see the light of day even as a limited edition. They did release the high resolution source file however, and it was this file that was used to inkjet print the map of Albion onto heavy canvas to make this cloth map. The map is massive – I think nearly 2 feet to a side. The real map, had it been made would have necessarily needed to be much smaller.
